Easy Chicken Coop Plans & Designs

My uncle built his portable coop inside 24hrs. He'll tell you what a great idea it really is to build your own. He has fresh organic eggs each and everyday now.

In addition, building your own chicken coop makes financial good sense. You can build a chicken coop at much less than the cost of buying a ready made one from the store. Most pre-built chicken coops you buy need to be assembled anyway, you're really just paying hugely inflated prices for the material. So may as well build your own.

Here are a some important things that should be taken into account:

The Coop's Floor Be Tilted At a Slight Angle

1. You should angle the floor slightly in the direction of the door. It's impossible to keep water completely out of the coop, and angling the floor slightly will help ensure that any water that is inside the coop, whether it be from heavy rain or from cleaning, will naturally drain out through the door.

2. The safety of the chicken - the coop should be made secure from the weather and preying animals? Remember that foxes, possums and a number of other critters will love to get to your chickens, so keep them safe.

3. Ventilation is very important in any chicken house as the chickens need to be kept cool in warm months. Thus a well made coop will have vents in the walls or small windows, obviously you will need to take account of wind factors, so make sure the vents are not facing towards the wind.

4. Is there enough warmth for chicks? If there isn't, a heating light should be installed.

5. There should be enough space for the chickens to perche; 8 inches of perch space should be allowed per chicken. To catch the droppings, have some trays under the perches, this will keep the coop clean as the trays can be moved for easy cleaning.

Easy chicken coop plans will help you to decide What size coop you need.

The Small Sized Coop
If you have a small backyard or you are just starting out to keep chickens, then you will need a small coop. A small coop is quick and cheap to build, easy to clean, and simple to make. As they are portable they are moved easily.

If you have between 5-9 chickens then a mid-sized coop is what you will need .

Having more than 10 chickens means that you should have a larger size coop.

It is essential that you have a plan if you need the larger sized chicken coop. It will obviously take longer to build and so more effort is needed. You don't want to spend more time and money on a mediocre coop when you could easily have one of a much higher quality with half the effort and have healthy chickens.

Most people prefer these easy chicken coop plans because the ideal large coop is included amongst the variety of easy chicken coop plans. Plus there is a ton of information on chickens and how to help them to thrive.
